Convergence is the number-one trend we've discussed repeatedly, and it certainly shows no sign of abating. ClamCase, the maker of a notebook-style iPad keyboard case, is now bringing convergence to your smartphone in a design that may actually be more practical, and far more economical, than the Fujitsu Lifebook 2013 Concept Notebook.
It's a BYOB, or Bring Your Own Brain design, with which the user supplies a smartphone as the CPU (Central Processor Unit). The ClamCase ClamBook, when brought to market, will take the form of a laptop shell, with very little inside, and will be significantly thinner than a MacBook Air. It does supply a full-sized keyboard with some dedicated Android keys, a 13.3-inch, 16:9 HD, LED backlit display, multi-touch trackpad, and 3D cinema sound. The display is WXGA, with 1,280 x 720 pixels.
A smartphone connects to the ClamBook's display through a USB connector cable, and to its keyboard via Bluetooth. That charges your smartphone while providing output of HD video and displaying apps full-screen utilizing MHL technology (Mobile High-definition Link). If a particular application supplies enhanced video output, it can display full-screen, in high-resolution, and in some cases providing actual 16:9 output. Otherwise, the ClamBook will mirror your iOS or android smartphone display. That setup provides a mobile workstation solution, or a media hub for games, movies, and various applications.
This device is all about the urge to converge, as previously seen in phablet smartphone developments.
For now, this smartphone-dock, in the form of a laptop-shell, exists only as a set of specifications that ClamCase says will become a real, material device, and available for the 2012 holiday season.
