It doesn't take 20/20 vision to see that the furious flurry of upcoming high pixel density display screens on tablets and smartphones is developing into a 2013 mobile device trend. The Google Nexus 10 tablet to be released in November now joins what is becoming a parade of devices that will feature PPI densities (Pixels Per Inch) that rival or exceed Apple Inc.'s so-called "retina display".

The Google Nexus 10 tablet immediately brings to mind the rumored Samsung P10 tablet with Exynos 5 Dual SoC chipset. That alleged P10 tablet would have had an 11.8-inch display giving it a PPI density almost identical to Apple's iPad. The Google Nexus 10 however has that chipset coupled with a display screen of just over 10-inches. The net effect is a 300 PPI display screen which beats Apple's iPad's 264 PPI, with almost 14 percent greater pixel density.

Using another measure of resolution the Apple iPad's 9.7-inch display is a QXGA, 2,048 x 1,536 pixel display as compared to a WQXGA, 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display on the Google Nexus 10 tablet, which delivers 30% more total pixels; 4,096,000 total pixels versus 3,145,728 on the 3rd generation Apple iPad's "retina display".

Making that Nexus 10 tablet's display even better is the fact that it incorporates the next generation of Corning Gorilla Glass 2, which is highly flexible, and has the ability to resist scratching and breakage.

Taking into account the superb Exynos 5 Dual SoC chipset, the Mali-T604 GPU, and magnificent display on the Google Nexus 10 tablet, one wonders if the rumored Samsung P10 has in fact just experienced its first incarnation, considering the fact that Samsung is the manufacturing partner on the Google Nexus 10 tablet.

In the Eyes of Beholders

Google and Samsung are not the only companies taking aim at shattering Apple's "retina display" technology prowess in pixel-to-pixel combat. JDI (Japan Display Inc.), Sharp Corporation, and also LG in cooperation with Oppo a Chinese smartphone maker, will each introduce products that will make Apple's "retina display" seem so-last-year.
