Less than three weeks ago we reported that the HTC J Butterfly phablet sized smartphone would probably make it to the USA before the end of the year. Industry reports concerning an FCC filing appear to validate a possible announcement by Verizon in November of this year.
That's exciting stuff for phablet aficionados because that phone would make Apple Inc.'s latest iPhone 5 look positively dated. There is industry speculation as to whether the new release will be called the HTC DLX, Droid Incredible X, or Droid DNA. What matters though, is the made-to-drool-for specifications of full HD, 440 PPI, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution on a 5-inch display coupled with 2 GB of RAM, and a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, Android Jelly Bean OS, 16 GB of storage, GSM, 4G LTE radios, and a 2,500 mAh battery.
That beauty could emerge from its cocoon in December of 2012.
We also reported on the Oppo Find 5, and said LG is the company that will provide full-HD screens for Oppo and certainly several other companies by early 2013.
Sharp Corporation is producing its own 5-inch full-HD (1,080 x 1,920 pixels) LCD panels for smartphones utilizing a new pixel design, and CG-Silicon (Continuous-Grain Silicon) technology.
Assessment
If the history of technology means anything we should expect most smartphone manufacturers to make products using 440 – 443 PPI display screens from LG, Sharp, or other sources no later than 2013.
Here's to hoping for a furious flurry of flocks of phablet sized smartphones with PPI counts higher than a gaggle of migrating geese.
