It’s hard to remember a time when we would have to take a roll of film into a photo lab before we could even look at our pictures. It might be even harder to remember the last time you’ve seen a photo lab. Well, that could be changing soon with the new storefront concept by Polaroid. The photo giant’s latest venture is the Fotobar. It will give people a fun way to transform their favorite digital photos into creative physical media.
With increasing photographic capabilities and endless digital storage we have become a culture that loves to take pictures constantly. It is now commonplace for most of us to document our lives every day with our smart phones; what we eat, what we’re wearing, who we’re with, and what we’re doing. Polaroid estimates that 1.5 billion pictures are taken a day. While most of those photos need not see the light of day, our best creations will maybe enjoy some popularity for a day or two on Facebook, and then will be quickly forgotten about. It seems like a logical step to feed this photo-centric generation’s need for instant gratification with something more tangible. Now we can turn our best memories and moments into works of art, or least a cool birthday gift for Mom.
Polaroid will officially announce the project during the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show and will debut the first Fotobar in Delray Beach, Florida, in February. If the Florida location is successful, which seems likely judging by the buzz surrounding the new concept, future Fotobars are scheduled to be opened this year in New York, Boston, and Las Vegas. Polaroid’s hopefulness to add a cool, experimental twist to an old concept is best summed up by a statement from Polaroid CEO Scott W. Hardy. “Polaroid has always been about much more than just taking pictures… We have been, and continue to be, about self-expression, creativity and fun.”
