Hello Internet! This week I wanted to get down to business on some seriously popular and controversial topics. I start off with a crazy story that has been floating all around the internet. A multinational security firm has secretly developed software capable of tracking people's movements, what they could be doing in the future and who they may be with, all by mining data from social media sites. I'm sure this is not the first time anyone has heard of the government spying on it's citizens, this just may be their next outlet to do so.
Next, I was excited to hear about Apple's rumored “smart watch” as their next possible move. Although there are other wearables out there at the moment, if Apple were to create the “iWatch”, it could be capable of doing a lot of what we love about the company's products. It is noted that the watch would be based on simplicity and design, Apple's most defining traits, rather than being extravagant or too fashionable looking. This doesn't surprise me one bit, and if the gadget explodes, as in popularity, that would not either.
I go onto a topic that interested me because it had to do with video gaming. The Xbox has a new edition coming out soon, which is expected to be named “Durango”, despite rumors of it being “Xbox 720”. Anyway, the most distinguishable trait about the new model is it will be equipped with the Kinect, rather than having the option of the console being “Kinect-ready”. Some may like this idea and some may not. However, the specs on the Durango seem to make it sound like it may have improved function.
For Wild and Wacky, the first topic I go over is Valentines Day related, especially appropriate for the episode to air the day after the 14th. I read about a guy on Techcrunch.com, who decided to build an app on the Android phone for an ex-girlfriend of his in hopes to win her back. I found it sweet and odd at the same time. The app, named “Shipoopi”, from an inside joke between the ex couple, was made just for her and it's function is incredibly simple. All the app seems to do is make it possible for your lock screen to display all your apps. This avoids the “hassle” (?) of unlocking your smart phone before being able to choose the app you need.
The second Wild and Wacky topic was one of my favorite topics to write about so far. After 25 years of research the first bionic eye has been developed. It is currently being used in Europe and the US is expected to receive approval from the FDA this year. The bionic eye was developed for people who suffer from a retinal disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, where retinal photo-receptors degenerate. The two major components of the revolutionary gadget include a surgical and wearable aspect, but the coolest part is the is glasses the subject wears, specialized with a mini camera. Of course, the outcome of the device and surgery vary per patient, but the technology is incredibly inspiring.
