E14 – Earth Day, Earth-Friendly Technologies, Google’s Green Move | Red Headed Geek Show

In loo of Earth day on the April 22nd, this week's episode of RHGS has been dedicated to the intertwining of technology and it's impact on earth-friendly practices! Google celebrated by changing their default logo to images of animals, forests, etc!

An incredible find at Goodwill happened recently. A very lucky lady discovered an ultra-rare copy of NES Stadium Events for $7.99. There are only a few copies out there, and mostly on eBay for up to 75 thousand dollars! The games' rarity comes from its limited release prior to Nintendo recalling the game and changing it to World Class Track Meet. After realizing what she had found, she visited a video game retailer and they could not meet halfway on a deal. Turns out her copy had a small snag in the plastic, however is still expected to run for a whopping 11 thousand dollars!

In other Google news, they could be going towards green energy! With an expected partnership with Duke Energy, the two will soon be in efforts to push the development more rapidly. It cost more so Google will be expected to pay more to go green, as any company would. This of course will include Google center's themselves to be run with clean energy. Apple is rumored to pair up as well.

A really neat new bike helmet has inspired an inventor, but from whom or what? A woodpecker? Yes! The manner in which a woodpecker pecks at trees all day long proves that they have some sort of protection for their brains. The inventor took this hint and went with it. He tried over 150 different samples of every material he could think of and put them through crash tests. Cardboard came out as the winner of safety! The cardboard design in particular has a honeycomb-like structure, a hexagonal element that can protect impact from all directions!

A gadget that I would love to order for myself if an alarm clock powered by water. You can also put flowers in it because it is also a vase! I was amazed to read that it is not only powered by water, but by next to anything. I read that coffee, soda, energy drinks and even beer can power the thing. I guess because they have water in them? What I wonder is what would happen to the flowers if you put some of these beverages in the clock for fuel. Probably not very well.

My last topic is a great and already in the works technology, called bio-plastics! Plastics made from natural sources, that are completely compostable and will not sit in landfills for a hundred years! What are they trying to make plastics from these days? Poop. Yes, raw sewage is generated by millions of tons a year, how could we not do something with it? Sewage is already turned into clean water for irrigation and even household use. The carbon rich solid that comes from the sewage can be transformed and used for a variety of plastics!!!

See you all next week! Thoughts or ideas about my Earth-friendly episode of the RHGS? Like my new background? Thank you for ready and watching this week! Next week is back to gadgets and gizmos!!
