All gadgets this week! Too much rad stuff to not share! Scientists at Cornell University have been developing a PR2 robot capable of anticipating human actions, meaning if you want a beer, the friend will get you one! It is equipped with Microsoft's Kinect and a database of 3D videos to recognize objects and human actions. This is the way it is capable of figuring out what you might do next. Neat or what? (Don't say “what”). The robot is hoped to help with care giving and the elderly in the future, so no, it is not just for the generous pouring of beer.
A company called Mataerial, yeah like “Material” has built a 3D printer that's the first of its kind. It can print upwards, downwards, diagonally, every which way! How? Well, the thermoset polymer that comes out while printing immediately dries, allowing for such curvature. In addition, the robotic arm moves in all directions. The company also claims the printer can created multicolored prints by injecting die mid-strand! As a new trend for 3D printing, the Mataerial could lead to future printing possibilities such as fabricated furniture!
3D printing body parts have been in the tech news for a while now. It is becoming more of reality due to the amazing scientists working on regenerative techniques in the lab. With the use of ceramic powders and titanium, some body parts could be utilized to build a true human body part. Now, as far as organs and tissues, this possible as well. 3D printers can use cell-based ink, in addition to other cultures to print actual internal organs. Although not yet used on a human being, with the recent fully functional liver and earlobe printed, there is no doubt they on well on their way to helping those in need very soon.
An amazing thing happened over the weekend! A Raspberry Pi went up up and away! That's right! A self titled armchair astronaut named Dave Akerman build a foam replica of the Pi log, and internally loaded it with the Pi and the newly released 5 megapixel Pi camera. Then, with the help of a hot air balloon it was shot into air. After going an incredible 29 miles above earth and traveling for three hours over southern England, it captured some beautiful images of our earth from the upper atmosphere. What an achievement!
