Google Glass Captures First Arrest: Why the Controversy?

This is a video of just a fight, right? What I mean is, the person getting kicked and punched isn't the one wearing the Glass right? Answer is nope, that is just the person filming, but do not doubt we will see a video like that sometime in the future. Question is, why is a man catching this on his Glass getting so much attention? Well folks, we've gotten the marriage proposal, Newt Gingrich wearing them, and even that crazy man who took a photo of himself wearing them in the shower, but this is a first and it brought upon new GG pros and cons to consider.

Not only that but this brought a lot of controversy to the topic of Google Glass user's privacy invasion (not new at all, I know), but the wearer himself wrote the “video is proof that Google Glass will change citizen journalism forever!”. I don't know about that, but through research I have been convinced that folks are very apprehensive about the video's privacy implications. No one out there asked to be filmed, correct? Yet, how many people pull out their smart devices to capture epic moments such as this? So how is this any different?

Another point brought up by reporters includes the idea that most by-standers didn't even notice the man was wearing them. Is it that or did they just not care? There's something to consider when thinking about privacy invasion. Going the “pro-GG” route, cameras are sure of a heck more accurate when recollecting extraordinary events than humans are, so there is one benefit. In hindsight, I would hope wearers would use the device to capture acts like this and others, such as law enforcement violence and other acts of crime. That, my friends, is merely a hope. Knowing the manner people enjoy posting funny things for social media sake, I foresee more nip slips, dogs engaging in “acts” and other means of amusement on the forefront.

However, Google Glass wearers are being called “Glassholes”. Not 100 % sure why, but I think it's all linked to our delicate bond we have to our privacy. Heck, correct me if I'm wrong but every time we go outside we aren't in private. But, I do find it reasonable to feel a bit vulnerable walking by one of these Glassholes and having instinctual feelings like: “I am being recorded right now, this person is crazy, he is going to stalk me, who is going to see this?”, etc. NSA's little brother much? That is what it is being called by some. So there you have it, this is why the video does have some significance. It is not just the boardwalk fight caught on camera, and now viral web video, it's what it represents to every Glass wearer out there. And how they decide to use it with their very own freedom lies the significance.
