What We Can Expect from Apple’s iWatch

iWatchThis fall the moment we've all been waiting for could arrive. I'm talking about the moment when Apple finally ships its long-rumored smartwatch. Samsung, Sony, and LG have already been showing off their sassy timepieces for months. Of the many features we have been wondering about, appearance is obviously at the top. Sources say the iWatch will come in multiple screen sizes and shapes, yet rumors still differ regarding whether it will be round or rectangular. Speculation increased this week when Apple announced an upgrade to its operating system, iOS 8. The new software is expected in September, with new tools emphasizing health and fitness.

iWatch1Despite no public mention of the smartwatch from Apple, spectators have been pushing out as much as they know. Apple, who hired Quanta to begin mass producing the iWatch for launch as early as October 2014, says the device is expected to sport a “slightly rectangular” display, slimly protruding from the band to create an arch. Various sources predict the watch to measure 2.5 inches diagonally, while The Wall Street Journal mentioned multiple screen sizes, even a female and male option. The watch, which will “include a touch interface and wireless charging”, should have up to 10 sensors for measuring various health metrics in addition to heart rate, sleep quality, and pulse.

Despite it's streamlined product lineups, Apple could benefit from offering multiple sizes or styles; especially since it already has quite a few contenders in the smartwatch market. For example, the Pebble smartwatch has two versions, the original and the Steel. The Android smartwatch offers choices in shape, which will come in both round and rectangular-faced options. These, as well as Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch, are big competitors for Apple. Coming into the smartwatch world late isn't disheartening Apple who “plans on selling 50 million units in the first year”, according to a Reuters report.
