Apple to Release Two New Versions, Bigger Screens

iPhone6imagesWhen Apple thinks of its iPhone, perhaps it is reminded of the smartphone line that drives half of its business around the fall of every year. When consumers think about the iPhone, many of us think of a very popular, very consistent, high-end smartphone. Change is coming soon, however, and it could drive iPhone sales this year. Chinese suppliers are gearing up to manufacture two new iPhones, both of which will sport bigger screens. A major leap from the 4-inch iPhone 5S and 5C, the new iPhone 6 will have display screens that are 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches across, according to Bloomberg. The phones are expected to hit markets later this year, and should be available at the same time, “contradicting previous rumors that the 5.5-inch model could be held up thanks to a production issue involving the in-cell technology for the larger display”. If the rumors ring true, this would be the second year in a row that Apple releases two phones. Also consistent with launch patterns from Apple, these devices should be expected in the fall.

News of the two new models came just days after iWatch speculators spoke of its anticipated arrival later this year. Apple seems to take its time when it comes to following trends. In fact, Apple only offered a single, iconic iPhone for six whole years before finally launching the high-end iPhone 5S, and the affordable plastic iPhone 5C. Bigger screens have proven to be popular, especially in Asia. In recent years, tech rivals Samsung, HTC, and Nokia have all released larger display devices. The upcoming 5.5-inch iPhone model is hinted to nearly match Samsung’s massive Galaxy Note 3, with an iPad-like design. The handsets are also expected to be thinner and rounder than older models. Bloomberg also announced, “curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure”. Additional rumors include a switch to Indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) for its display, a higher resolution (which some are calling “ultra-Retina”), a better camera, and a faster brain with the next-in-line processor, a 2.6GHz A8 SOC (system on a chip).

Tim Cook, Xi GuohuaSuch high demand is expected for the new line of iPhones, Hon Hai Precision Industry will recruit over 100,000 people in mainland China to produce it. This will be the largest single hiring spree in China. Also expected to participate is fellow Taiwanese contract manufacturer Pegatron Corp, who will be expanding its workforce by 30 percent. Apple will begin mass production next month. Leaked images and renders of the iPhone 6 supports the notion of a bigger display, also showing a slim profile of the phone. For now, images are asked to be taken “with a grain of salt”, and Apple has declined to comment on anything.
