Samsung Releases Its Built-to-Order $120,000 TV

SamsungUltraHdTvThis week Samsung showed off its 105-inch Ultra HD TV, the UN105S9W, for a whopping $120,000. That’s a television that costs as much as a BMW, a really, really nice BMW M5. We might remember the CES 2014 sneak peak of the set, which is apparently “made to order” and personally installed and set up by a specialized group of “Field Engineers”. Fancy huh?

Well, the TV has been making waves in the tech press since we first saw it and now it’s officially available for the richest of folks. Samsungs behemoth has won acclaim for being the largest TV to have both Ultra HD and a curved OLED display. Its ratio is a “cinematic” 21:9 (Vizio holds the only other 21:9 TV currently on the market). It boasts a better-than-4K resolution, measuring 5,120 x 2160, or 11 million pixels.

SamsungUltraHdTv1If you had a hard time finding native 4K content for your standard Ultra HD TV, have a fun time with this thing. Besides that, you should have plenty to watch, especially when using Samsung’s Quad Screen Multi-Link for splitting the panel into four virtual screens. Here, you could watch TV, streaming video, and web content all at once. While you’re at it, maybe you could buy yourself a few new sets of eyes.

The ridiculous cost means you are getting ridiculous size. What is the purpose of filling up 11 million pixels? Because you can! It’s supposedly an “immersion experience”, similar to being in the movie theater. Samsung claims that its Quadmatic Picture Engine can make the immersion experience even more memorable by delivering any and all content automatically in Ultra HD format. This is thanks to the curvature of the screen, which shows detailed imagery even when viewed in side angles. At four times the standard contrast and definition of normal HD TVs, I guess you have to pay over a hundred times the cost. But hey, at least a certified technician will come to your house to explain all the features of the TV and optimize it for your viewing environment.
