Skully AR-1 is a new motorcycle helmet making waves on Indiegogo surpassing its crowdfunding goal three-fold in just one day (in 8 minutes, actually!). The helmet, which is dubbed the most technically advanced motorcycle helmet created thus far, was first debuted at the Demo Conference last year, winning awards from both Demo and South by Southwest interactive. The helmet, while aiming to increase safety for riders, features a heads-up display (HUD) system as well as Bluetooth technology. Skully founder and CEO Marcus Weller says, “The AR-1 will introduce a new era in intelligent transportation by combining optics, intelligent vehicle systems and connectivity to deliver unprecedented levels of safety”.

The helmet gives riders a live feed from a 180-degree rear view camera, which “eliminates blind spots using proprietary technology to eliminate the fish-eye effect ”. The view of the back of the road is displayed outside the primary field of view, appearing 10 feet away. Although there is an interface for displaying information, it's engineered so it requires very little attention to use it. One of the more obvious perks is safety, but this smart helmet can make riding more fun and involved.

Skully comes with visual and audio-cued GPS navigation, and is compatible with both iPhone and Android devices via Bluetooth. Users can customize their ride settings using the companion Skully app. The helmet has an integrated audio system, can provide turn-by-turn navigation, and any music playing will be shown through the HUD. Because Skully also offers voice control, a phone call can be placed with out the interference of lifting a finger.

Motorcyclists have been enthusiastic about the helmet since the Skully website launched late last year. A mailing list of over 145,000 curious riders have awaited its release. Luckily, Skully is now taking pre-orders on Indiegogo, with an introductory price of $1,399 and shipments in May. After that, prices will rise to $1,499, (about the same as a pair of Google Glass). Skully AR-1 is Department of Transportation (DOT) and UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) certified, meaning it has been deemed as safe for road use and head protection.
