Ralph Lauren Gets High-Tech Makeover

PoloWearTechWearable tech is about to hit one of the world's most watched tennis courts this week. Coinciding with the very first day of the US Open is a new biometric smart shirt brought by one of the world's leading fashion designers, Ralph Lauren. Known for its classic preppy design, the innovative Polo Tech compression shirt will have built-in sensors that can read biological and physical data.

Ball boys who retrieve missed shots will wear Polo Tech during the tournament. Lauren developed the shirt with biometric technology, from Canadian-based fitness tracking company OMSignal, which makes wearable fitness trackers. OMSignal will read the activity levels of the boys, including heartbeat, respiration, stress level, and energy output, and send the information to the user's Bluetooth-connected smartphone. OMSignal co-founder and CEO Stephanie Marceau says, “ It captures what we call the 'ABC' of health and wellness. A is for activity, B is for breathing, and C is for Cardiac”. In addition to the 'ABC' of health, the real-time app builds what it calls a “Fuel” gauge for measuring how much fuel is used in a day.

PoloWearTech1Although Lauren has been working with various sporting events for years in efforts to debut more efficient sport fabrics, this is the first time wearable technology has come into the mix. The Polo Tech shirt looks similar to any other sports shirt, and as most compression garments, it hugs and contours the body. If you look closely, you'll see a band of slightly thicker material directly below the chest with a black module snapped to it, where the Bluetooth transmitter, accelerometer, and gyroscope live. Underneath that fabric are silver-yarn-based sensors. The fabric is also anti-microbial and completely washable (just remember to take off the module first!). Still only considered a prototype, Polo Tech shirts wont be available in stores until early next year.
