WEDG- for Those Who Prefer Their Data to be Private

WedgUsing the cloud to store data, personal files, and photos does not equal the picture perfect idea of privacy. Forget all those celebrities who decided to store naked photos of themselves in the cloud, only to find them spread all over the interwebs. We're talking about the privacy of you and I; a privacy we need to take back. That's what personal cloud system WEDG wants to offer. Essentially an external hard drive, WEDG works just like Google Drive or Dropbox without having to entrust on mysterious servers. After launching its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo and hitting its funding target in just one week, tech startup WEDG is ready to expand its service and become competitive.

Wedg1After all the talk about cloud being vulnerable to threats, it makes perfect sense that WEDG would work by being “off-cloud”. You can still call it cloud, but think of it as an exclusive cloud. Using 512-bit encryption, WEDG is a self-hosted email that works in the home or the office; anywhere you trust is safe from threats. It insists on offering true security, real privacy, and a solution to the so defenseless cloud storage system. Examples of this include embedded passwords, two-factor authentication, and built-in key management that come with each sent file. According to TechCrunch, “sensitive user data is also sandboxed away from any third party apps within a secure zone on the device to prevent outside services accessing encrypted content”.

Wedg2WEDG isn't just an email server and file storage server. It also wirelessly syncs and shares, streams media to smart devices, as well as “supports website and app hosting with a built-in FTP, SQL, and Apache server”(TheWhir). Due to its immense success and support from backers, the team behind the device says it looks forward to open sourcing the project, and inviting developers who want to “expand the WEDG capabilities”. Powered by either ARM or Intel Atom CPU, WEDG's price ranges from 149 to 219 Euros and comes with 1TB of storage.
