Ubi, an intercom-looking box measuring 4.75 x 4.75 inches and 1.5 inches thick, plugs into an outlet and connects to your Wi-Fi (Tech Hive). An accompanying smartphone app, although not needed to operate Ubi, also has built-in voice control if you're out of the home or away from the unit. Either way, you can control and give commands to your smart thermostat, blinds, door locks, and lightbulbs by linking up with them over Wi-Fi. This includes third-party home devices, such as the Nest Thermostat, as well as other gadgets in the SmartThings portfolio. It even works with a list of If This Then That (IFTTT) recipes, which can be found on the IFTTT site.
Believe it or not, Ubi has been in beta testing for over two years, after having a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 that helped raise funds to get the device progressing. Its manufacturer, UCIC, now calls it the “Voice of the Internet”, and has raised over $1 million ($230,00 through Kickstarter) to start shipping its $299 Ubi. Actually, that $299 price is so two years ago. UCIC has officially lowered Ubi's price tag to just $199 (PC World).
