Lenovo’s LaVie Laptop Series Are Lighter than You’ll Believe

LenovoLaVieSince its reveal at CES 2015 this week, everyone is talking about the oh-so-light Lenovo LaVie HZ550. At just 1.72 pounds, Engadget calls it “stupidly, record-breakingly compact”. There's nothing wrong with that. I know I sure wouldn't mind having a laptop so light I could hold it with two fingers. What's more, is the LaVie comes in another flavor, as a standard 13-inch laptop called the HZ750. This one has a convertible aspect, with a 360 degree hinge for turning it into tablet mode; and it's only 2.04 pounds, making me curious just how Lenovo pulled this kind of weight off. When it comes to the skinny notebook market, both of Lenovo's new LaVie models are already making a statement.

Ultrathin laptops like this are already common in Japan, the home of Lenovo's partner in crime, NEC. Together, NEC and Lenovo have been designing laptops together, a business venture that has greatly influenced Lenovo's popularity (Engadget). Now the two are ready to release these two systems outside of Japan for the very first time.

LenovoLaVie1The true design genius, according to Gizmodo, is the non-convertible version, which weighs half as much as the popular Mac Book Air! However, once the convertible LaVie is in tablet mode, it is also easy to handle with one hand, despite being 13-inches across. How are they so light? Both models are made out of a magnesium-lithium chassis, a material known to be 50% lighter than traditional aluminum. Both screens have a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, are packed with Intel's 5th gen Broadwell Core i5 processor (with the option of an i7 in the convertible), as well as 128 GB of SSD (Cnet). Battery life is on par with heavier and thicker laptop competitors, ranging from 7 to 8 hours of video playback (Engadget).

The major difference between the two has to be the lack of a touchscreen on the HZ550 model, but that's the joy of being able to pick between the two. Speaking of, the Lenovo LaVie HZ550 and HZ750 models are priced at $1,299 and $1,499, respectively. Both will be available for purchase in the US starting May 2015.
