System76 Launches Meerkat, Broadwell-Powered Mini-desktop PC

System76System76 is a Colorado-based computer manufacturer, best known for its open source software support; and use of Ubuntu Linux in its notebooks, desktops, and servers-which were actually some of the first to come with Linux pre-installed. The number 76 is even reference to the year of the American Revolution of 1776, symbolizing the company's mission to ignite an open source revolution (Wikipedia). So, despite the number of you that have never heard of System76, it's actually one of the most popular niche computer manufacturers. It's especially nice for those wanting an all Linux-based PC, but don't want to have to purchase a Windows machine then replace the OS. The company is in the news this week after hinting at a new small form factor PC called the Meerkat.

System76-1Based off of Intel's new NUC mini-desktop design, which was announced at this year's CES, the Meerkat is a 4 x 4 inch square device that will feature Intel 5th generation processors, support up to 16GB of RAM, hold up to 2TB of storage, has a M.2 slot for solid state storage, and a 2.5-inch drive bay for SSD or a hard drive (Liliputing). There are also two CPU options, the i3-5010U and the i5-5250U, with Intel HD 5500, and Intel HD 6000, respectively (Beta News). Finally, Meerkat will include HDMI and Display Port, Ethernet, 4 USBs, and a headphone jack.

System76-2Meerkat is ready for the market. According to Beta News, the company has fully engineered the min PCs and is currently working on retail packaging, imaging, and distribution. Among many unanswered questions, exact pricing is one of them. It's expected to be competitive with other small companies of the like, and Liliputing reports that System76 has quoted the $500 range. The devices will launch at the end of this month.
