A new solid-state drive (SSD) from OCZ is here, and although it was designed to compete with the likes of high-end SSD's like the Samsung 850 Pro, it doesn't quite meet benchmark performance expectations. That doesn't mean it won't be useful replacement drives for many. OCZ hasn't had it easy. The company, after adopting SandForce controller technology before it was all tweaked out, threw quite a few crappy SSDs at us for a couple years (Tech Report). Toshiba took the company in 2013, which has put OCZ on the up and up ever since, or at least it's been trying to.
So here comes the Vector 180, OCZ's new flagship (replacing the Vector 150) 2.5-inch consumer SSD with a new capacity of 960GB (120GB, 240GB, and 480GB are also options). Built around the company's Barefoot 3 flash controller, and utilizing some of Toshiba's newer A19nm MLC NAND flash memory, Vector 180 fits in any laptop that uses a standard hard drive, but also includes an adapter for fitting in desktops. It supports SATA 3, and is rated to withstand 50GB of writes per day, with its five-year warranty (Cnet). If you're wondering what this all means as far as performance, it's good but not great.
The Vector 180 is OCZ's march into larger SSD territory. They have to keep up with the pack somehow, but they also have to keep working on producing better products to give the OCZ (Toshiba) company some new shine. You want that warranty, by the way. It's important when it comes to storage devices. Finally, for any users who desire upgrades, it comes with a license for Aconis True Image HD for back up and cloning, and a new feature called Power Failure Management to protect its data. It is priced at $500 for the 960GB version, which, if comparing to Samsung's 1TB SSD at $730, there's some competition to be had.
