I had saved a small sum of money to purchase some computer parts and began selling them on eBay. After a few months I realized that people needed a place to go for Dell parts so I began building our website. Lenovo announced their tiny PC on a stick this week, joining the ranks of companies like Intel and CTL which debuted their own similarly tiny devices earlier in the year. While Lenovo is not the first kid on the block to release this tiny technology, they do appear to have made some improvements upon the idea, and have managed to do so at a lower cost to consumers than the competition.
The Ideacentre Stick 300 can connect to any display with an HDMI port. At only 15mm thick, it is small enough to slide right into your pocket and still contains all the desired components to run a full PC. Inside you’ll find an Intel Baytrail Processor Z3735F, 2GB of memory and up to 32GB of storage. It comes with Bluetooth 4.0 as well as 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, and can even function with a 2.4GHz wireless keyboard and mouse. The tiny dongle also manages to easily house one HDMI port, a MicroUSB 2.0 port and an SD card reader. And to top it all off, the Ideacentre Stick 300 comes with a tiny speaker housed right on it, enabling it to provide audio to displays that do not already have speakers of their own. As far as I’m aware, Lenovo is the first to include this feature on a PC stick.
The Ideacentre Stick 300 will initially come with Windows 8.1 and, just as most PCs and tablets, will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 when the new OS debuts July 29th. As an added bonus, it will even come preloaded with a fee three-month trial to Microsoft Office 365. And just to put the cherry on this pocket PC sundae, Lenovo is offering it at a significantly lower price than their competitors at only $129. If you can’t imagine what the point of such a gadget, just imagine being able to plug this little dongle into your bedroom television or at hotels when you’re travelling and immediately being able to access media, browse the web, and even make little tweaks to files and documents you’ve been hard at work on – the convenience of use it offers is limitless. As vice president and general manager of Worldwide Desktop and Visual at Lenovo says, “We’ve looked at the computing needs of travelers, business people and families, and realized that a truly portable and affordable solution would be a significant benefit to users of all kinds”. We’ll be able to see if they succeeded in this goal when the Ideacentre Stick 300 hits retail shelves this fall.
