What in the world is Origin PC? If you’re not a big gamer you might not have heard of this custom PC manufacturing company. The Florida-based company was founded by Alienware employees in 2009. They have since become professionals in high-performance gaming desktops and laptops made with third-party components; and optional custom paint and logos (Wikipedia). The company made its first big appearance at CES just back in 2014, where it launched its very first laptop and desktop computers. So although popular, it’s no wonder many of us haven’t heard about Origin. They’ve barely been around.

Origin’s latest gaming laptop, the 10.5 pound (you heard me right), 16.8 x 12 x 1.7-inch EON17-SLX, follows suit of what other big players in the industry are using in their devices. Now is the time to offer laptops that can be desktop replacements, and doing so means including big and competitive names in graphics and processing power. Origin wanted to be no different, it’s EON17-SLX has hard-hitting hardware, such as Intel’s i7 and i5 chips (that means skipping the the quad-core and going straight to desktop performance), and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 GPUs. This ultimately means clock speeds starting at 4GHz, running up to 4.2GHz, which is good news considering comparable laptops generally range between 2.9GHz and 3.6GHz (PC World).

If part of Origin’s plan was to up its game, I’d say one of the best features besides hardware is the devices’ full configurability. You can choose from up to 32GB of DDR4-2133 RAM, with rumors of up to 64GB 2400 MHz RAM configurations. Good thing there’s a GeForce GPU in Origin’s new laptop, because it means an easy time pushing the 1920 x 1080 pixels found in its 17.3-inch Full HD display, not to mention its “G-sync technology to ensure multi-display compatibility” (Digital Trends). It can also house multiple storage drives; up to four m.2 PCI2 solid state drives (SSDs) to be exact. So, customizable it is.

This machine is basically capable of anything, graphics-wise. From 4K gaming to virtual reality, the Origin EON17-SLX aims to please. Aesthetically, this laptop is nice to look at. Its keyboard and trackpad are both multi-colored backlit, and it comes in a variety of metallic colors to choose from (hope you don’t mind metallic). On that note, I also hope you don’t mind paying $2,000 for a laptop, because that’s what the Origin EON17-SLX costs. Just remember, you’re getting desktop quality and performance in laptop form.
