One company I might have forgotten about during this year’s CES was Razer. Something about the influx of ultra-thins, convertible 2-in-1s, and revamped PC dongles made me brush the idea of gaming notebooks to the side. But that doesn’t mean Razer doesn’t deserve some attention for its Blade Stealth Ultrabook that is already up for sale. We know Razer as a company that makes lovely accompaniments for computer gamers. Anything from mice to keyboards has been done by these guys. From time to time we do get our hopes up with Razer’s gaming laptops, and sometimes things don’t turn out quite the way we had hoped. But this lightweight laptop changes the name of the game in gaming Ultrabooks. It’s thinner than most of what we’ve seen, the display is outstanding, and its processor is pretty much the best you can get.

At CES, Razer showed off its Blade Stealth- an ultrabook with super hero-level specs, all while staying affordable (also said to be a “spin-off variant of the company’s core gaming laptop lineup”). It has two 12.5-inch configurations, one with a 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution touchscreen display, and the other sporting a 4K 3,840 x 2,160 panel. Its sleek black chassis body weighs just 2.75 pounds (you may notice that this particular spec is a lot less than what most gaming Ultrabooks weighs), and measures just .5 inches thick. Processing power includes the best of the best, Intel’s Core i7-CPU. This is a much higher-end performer than the average gaming laptop, not to mention it runs the smooth operating Windows 10.

Besides the system using Intel’s 520 HD graphics, which is usually not quite enough oomph for gamers, the Razer Blade Stealth includes the Razer Core. Razer Core is a dedicated graphics station that sits alongside the laptop where you can plug in an external graphics of your choice, using USB Type-C (Digital Trends). There is 8GB of RAM, and it supports anything from 128GB to 512GB of internal storage. Connectivity includes a USB Type-C port for charging, and a Thunderbolt 3 connector for anyone who wants to extend their screen to the monitor, add peripherals, charge the laptop, or “drastically augment the Stealth’s gaming performance, all at the same time”(Cnet).

Last thing, both models feature an extra highlight- the Chroma coloring tech that Razer is known for - this time allowing the user to customize their keyboard into colors of their choice (that’s 16 million colors, mind you). This marks the first individually RGB backlit keyboard on any laptop, which could improve the experience of typing or gaming for some. Also, it’s pretty.

The baseline model is available for purchase for as little as $1,000. Of course, if the 4K resolution is something you desire, you’ll have to pay the extra dough. The external graphics docking station will be for sale in the first half of the year, but prices are unknown. This is a solid report for the Razer Blade Stealth gaming laptop. The only considerable drawbacks include an 8-hour battery life and 6-hour battery life for the QHD and 4K displays, respectively. As of now, the gaming ultrabooks are available online, but will be available in the physical Microsoft Store, starting February.
