What has Asus been up to lately? Besides launching some great new laptops, their own Chromebit, ZenWatch 2, and ZenFone Zoom? If you’re thinking there couldn’t possibly be more for one company to put out at a time you’re wrong. Last week, Asus added a couple of new mini PCs to their VivoMini system lineup of devices. Dubbed the Asus VivoMini VC65, these little guys sport Intel Skylake for power, and multitudes of storage. Proving big things come in small packages, Asus first showed the new VivoMinis off at the 2016 CES in January. Now, as more details are out regarding the hardware inside these things, it looks like consumers will have the choice as to what kind of storage modules they want, as well as be able to configure the hardware.

The new VivoMini VC65 mini PCs are designed for a variety of settings, including home or office. You can pretty much take them anywhere, they’re tiny. Top of the line models even feature RAID support (these are called VC65Rs), “allowing you to treat multiple storage devices like a single drive and/or mirror data from one drive to another to reduce the chances of losing data” (Liliputing). But, it doesn’t have to get that complicated, you can chose your very own barebone model, and configure your storage, memory, and operating system just the way you like it (Asus promises the chassis is designed to handle lots of opening and closing).

Onto the specs. Besides being powered by (desktop-grade) 6th generation Intel Skylake processors clocked at up to 2.8GHz, connectivity on these things is great. There’s a bunch of video output options, including HDMI, VGA, and a DisplayPort, plus a 4-in-1 card reader, six USB 3.0 ports (yes, six!), an SD card reader, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Most exciting is the fact that these are the “world’s smallest mini PCs that accommodate up to four 2.5-inch SSD or HDD storage modules”.

Whether you decide to use the Asus VivoMini VC65 or VC65R as a desktop replacement, network-attached storage device, media server, or something else, everything should perform smoothly. Asus is also adding helpful accessories, like a Media Streamer and Remote Go! app, where users can control the mini PC from afar. Web storage is free, at up to 100GB, for the first year (Digital Trends). Unfortunately, it is unknown when the new VivoMini models will be released, nor how much they will cost.
