As I type on my Chromebook, the notion that more and more folks are hopping on the Chromebook train comes as no shock to me. These cheap PCs, particularly loved by students and business folk, are built well, and with better hardware than ever. I don’t know of any other laptop you can buy that harnesses Intel inside, and costs less than $300. Announced back in January at CES 2016, there’s a better-than-ever Chromebook officially up for sale from Samsung. Priced at just $200, the Chromebook 3 is able to maintain that sleek Samsung build and house Intel Braswell.
During CES, details weren’t given regarding the pricing of the Samsung Chromebook 3. Now that details are out, we get a first look at all the specs that fit into the teensy $200 price tag. At first glance, the Chromebook 3 has the appearance of pretty much any Samsung notebook. However, unlike past Chromebooks from the South Korean company, the plastic body has been swapped out for a metal body, weighing in at 2.5 pounds, good for both sturdiness and physical appeal. It sports an 11.6-inch display, featuring a 1366 x 768 resolution with anti-glare. Powered by an Intel Celeron processor, it will come with 2GB of RAM, possibly offering a 4GB model down the road (says ZD Net). As far as storage, there is 16GB on board, and a microSD slot when more is needed. Additional ports include HDMI, USB 3.0 for peripherals, plus it has Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and an estimated battery life of 11 hours.
Continuing its line of Chromebooks is a smart move for Samung, who can’t ignore that the “easy-to-use, highly portable and affordable laptops” have been gaining traction for a while now (Samsung). In fact, since it launched its first Chromebook device back in 2011, Samsung knew it had to keep making more. Sure, the resolution isn’t anything fancy, but when it comes down to it, that’s plenty of pixels for a Chrome operating system. Intel Celeron isn’t going to give you high-end performance, but will easily satisfy its lightweight operating system. I always say, if all you need to do is browse the internet, type word documents, and upload or store photos, a Chromebook is a perfect option. Don’t let the low specs bring you down, there is a $200 price tag on a Samsung notebook device, that alone is something to smile about.
