When I think of Chromebooks, I don’t exactly consider them to be the most versatile things in the world. They are meant to only run Chrome OS, and tend to be simple and inexpensive devices. What if I told you there is a new type of Chromebook in town that is not only built to last, but can be converted from a laptop into a tablet? Well, Oregon-based CTL has announced the new rugged J5 Chromebook, featuring a 360-degree hinge. It’s a convertible Chromebook!

J5-folded-backWhether professional, educational, or personal, many have taken advantage of Chromebook’s economical functionality. The CTL J5, which is aimed for on-the-go professionals and academic institutions, features added protection from drops and spills, plus the endless benefits of being a 2-in-1 notebook; thanks to the system’s 360-degree hinge. It features an 11.6-inch IPS laptop display supporting 5-point touch input, optional stylus, and 1366 x 768 pixels. Inside, the J5 is powered via Intel’s N3050 Braswell processor, with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16GB of storage, expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot. As far as ports, there are two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack. There is also an HD webcam, and enough battery power that “can provide around 10 hours of use between charges”, says CTL (Liliputing).

Few OEMs have gone this far with Chromebooks, but CTL sure is embracing the brand by giving it far more functionality than it’s ever had as a plain old laptop. The rugged J5 will do particularly great in educational environments, and because kids can be unpredictable, you can expect this Chromebook to survive a moderate drop (a toss out the classroom window could be a different story). CTL has given reason to believe the new J5 Chromebook will be available just in time for the education buying season, starting at an aggressively competitive price of just $249.
