Dell Precision 15 5510: a Compact 15-inch Notebook With Excellent Performance

Precision5510Dell does the notebook game from head-to-toe. It has gone the consumer-focused route, business route, and everything in between with its convertibles, Ultrabooks, and mobile workstations. The more recent XPS devices are a great mixture of both beauty, power, and Infinity display, making it one of the more perfect-for-everyone (but mostly the consumer) type of machine. Dell has now created the perfect business model with all these lovely XPS components, inside and out, with its new Precision 5510. As a device with a beautiful exterior, Infinity display technology, and thin bezel, there’s more aspects of this mobile workstation that aren’t stuck in the past.

Precision5510-2It strides in performance without having to sport a heavy design and terrible battery life. The Precision 5510 features a 15.6 inch display, weighs 4.6 pounds (average for a workstation this size, as the XPS 15 is at 4.36 pounds), and measures 14 x 9.27 x .66 inches, which is the exact size of the XPS 15. The display is something to brag about. Dell went with both razor-thin bezels and an edge-to-edge display, featuring either 1080p or 3840 x 2160 pixels, depending on configuration. Screens like this are more than beautiful to look at, they provide a large surface area for handling multiple tasks. Business folks would love this.

Inside is a 2.8GHz Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor, a 2GB Nvidia Quadro M1000M graphics card, 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. With a variety of hardware configurations, you’re going to go across the board price-wise. Besides the baseline model described ($1,399), a fully-loaded version ($2,603), comes with Intel’s Xeon E3-1505M processor, a 2GB Nvidia Quadro M1000M graphics card, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD (PC Mag).

Precision5510-1All we ever hear about is limited battery life. I have yet to review an overall highly rated notebook that has a battery life to beat. The reasons for this issue are understandable- bigger processor, bigger design, and most of all, crazy good displays. These all equal strains on the system’s battery life. The Precision 5510’s 6 ½ hours of battery life may not be great for some, but for sure beats some rival workstations. Finally, as far as ports, there is a power jack, 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Thunderbolt 3 port, SD card slot, mic/headphone jack, and security lock slot (Laptop Mag).

Bottom line, Dell’s Precision 5510 would be “highly recommended for workers who need a little extra computing power”. The fact that it features an ultra HD display, a well-constructed system with a solid build, and premium performance ultimately means this workstation really is a compact workhorse. Laptop Mag says that if you’re looking for all of the above, but without the added power, the XPS 15 would be a better match for you. Others, meaning professionals on-the-go, could find great use out of the Precision 5510.
