Purism, the company whose self-proclaimed free/libre philosophy intends to provide high quality hardware, all while accommodating all the rights of security and privacy each device owner deserves. They care about respecting the freedom of the individual. Purism’s latest endeavour includes a 2-in-1 tablet, something not simply high-end like the Surface Pro or the iPad Pro, but one that includes open-sourced software intended to keep your information private, away from all the giant tech companies. Now what other company can you name both manufactures laptops and provides this protection?

There are previous devices from Purism, the Librem line to be specific. The line started with the successfully crowdfunded Librem 15, a portable PC that combined both modern display and Intel Core CPUs, complete with their running philosophy of privacy. The latest, the Librem 10-inch and 11-inch 1080p display devices, have a bit of a different form-factor (they double as a tablet and laptop), but nothing different, ethically. Their free-running open-sourced software help keep out the “bad guys” other manufacturers don’t. Both models run PureOS (by now, I bet you’re getting the “purity” trend going on here) 3.0 Linux (said to be similar to Canonical’s Ubuntu), come complete with Tor, HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger, as well as other ad blockers and privacy-protection services (Engadget).

Inside the hybrid device, you will find an Intel Core M5 processor at 2GHz, 8GB of RAM (expandable to 16GB), a 256GB SSD, 2MP front-facing camera, 5MP rear-facing camera, 1 USB 3.0 port, microSD port, micro SIM slot, and 4G NGFF connectivity slot. Of course, there’s also “built-in kill switches for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, and a microphone”, with the soon-to-be addition of GPS and cellular connectivity.

Ethos is important to Purism, as if you cannot tell by their name, and it is refreshing to see a company such as this take a stand against giant tech corporations who let in the malicious ads and other content. Now that they have successfully dove into the tablet, hybrid, and notebook market, the company is almost ready to add smartphones to their lineup. If you check out their Indiegogo page, you’ll see they’ve got a whopping $150,000 in funding goals ($12,455 has been raised so far, with two months to go), and are hoping to start shipping the Librem 10 and 11 in September.
