We first heard of Alienware’s 13-inch gaming machine during CES back in January of this year. Even then, it seemingly won the crown for being a game changer for portable gaming. Since then, Alienware gave enough consideration to the 13 to incorporate something well-deserved for its gaming community. Now we have the Alienware 13 Limited Edition, featuring an OLED display with 2,560 x 1,440 pixels.

Swapped out for the traditional display, OLEDs, or optical light emitting diodes, are the things that make both TVs and smartphones rich and refine in color. But when gamers get to enjoy the extra vibrant display type, not to mention Microsoft’s DirectX 12 API, it basically comes down to that, and next-gen graphics, as the winning combination for a lethal gaming machine. Speaking of winning, the Alienware 13 is pretty much getting a 4-5 star rating out of many reviewers, and beyond the obvious upgrade in display quality, another perk that could be getting these gamers excited is the option of adding VR-ready desktop graphics, but for a price.

Beyond display, performance is also what gaming is all about, am I right? Components inside include a U-series low-voltage Intel Core i7-6500U CPU (at 2.5GHz), and an Nvidia GeForce 965M GPU. Although these are the kind of specs you’d see on good (mainstream) gaming machines, you’re only working with a 13-inch display, which makes tapping out its settings while playing Titanfall 2 perhaps a little less epic than what a bigger display would exude. Additionally, although that GeForce graphics card is one of the newest variants in the 960-series, remember this hardware is working quite hard to meet that incredible, ultra pixelated display. The 4.5 pound Alienware 13 Limited Edition also includes a 256SSD, 12GB of DDR3 SDRAM memory at 1600MHz, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and of course, Windows 10 Home, running at 64-bit.

What Alienware is getting at is a visual experience never achieved before, edging itself towards PC display quality. Not only does OLED display the richness and vibrancy that can truly enhance the experience of playing a game, or even watching a film, if you knew how fast those pixels were refreshing themselves, you’d be thankful this technology is literally in your hands. It’s more or less incredible. But as I said to be thankful, also appreciate the few spontaneous moments of visual stuttering. I mean very few, like a dip as low as one millisecond at best. Alienware’s 13 Limited Edition could ultimately turn out to have one of the quickest panels on a new gaming laptop to date. Prices also start at $1,400, less than many of its competition.
