There is nothing startling about laptop makers using the phrase “the thinnest in the world”. Heck, is there anything very special about the phrase since nearly every tech giant out there is doing it? Acer, Asus, Chromebooks, HP, Lenovo, and others are all hip with the times. Acer, however, has officially touted the latest “World’s Thinnest Laptop” at IFA 2016, one of the largest technology trade shows in Europe.

The Berlin-based expo is where Acer proclaimed the happy news of its new laptops, the Swift series. The four ultra-thin devices, the Swift 1, Swift 3, Swift 5, and Swift 7, are all complete with Windows 10, described as having a good range of prices and designs for all budgets and lifestyles. However, focusing on the Swift 7 seems to be the thing to do. Not only is it an ultra-thin and lightweight notebook PC, it’s seriously the first laptop to get below the 1 cm mark (Apple’s MacBook measures 13mm, and the HP Spectre measures 10.4mm).

At just 9.98mm thick, this 13-inch clamshell laptop weighs in at just 2.48 pounds. Its Full HD IPS display features 1920 x 1080 pixels and is nearly bezel-less. The body is made of machined aluminum, with a nice black and gold design, and it’s nice to notice how incredibly large the trackpad is compared to most laptops. Hardware includes 7th generation Intel Core i5 processors, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and battery life that claims to last about 9 hours. Remember, with a laptop this thin, ports are sometimes inadequate. In the case of the Swift 7, there’s two USB Type-C ports and that’s it. Priced at $999, this is one of the very first laptops that offers Intel’s 7th gen Core i-series. Talk of the town says we should consider this conception of the Swift series to be fully loaded with power for both video decoding and playback.

For a quick run down of the other Acer Swift options, the Swift 5 is under 15mm thick, weighs a heftier 3.88 pounds, features a 14-inch display, and has only one different spec than the Swift 7- a 512GB SSD. The Swift 3, measuring 17.95mm thick, weighs 3.3 pounds, has a 14-inch display, and offers both 6th and 7th gen Intel processors. This version also offers Intel Pentium and Celeron processors to be more budget-friendly. Finally, the 12-inch Acer Swift 1 weighs in the heftiest, at 3.5 pounds and 17.9mm thick. It features Intel Pentium or Celeron, 4GB of RAM, and either 64GB or 128GB of eMMC storage. Exact configurations for each device are coming soon (sorry this is all I could get), but we do know the Swift 7 will be hitting the shelves in the US and Europe in October.
