And it is here. As revealed at Computex 2017 in Taipei, Asus describes its new gaming laptop as practically being a desktop under the hood. You could actually end up agreeing with that, considering its eight-core CPU, but go ahead and be your own judge. Since it’s more fun to talk about the higher spec versions of such a fancy new laptop, let us do that, shall we? Dubbed the Asus ROG Strix GL702ZC, yes we know that the pinpoint of its release is its Ryzen-powered attribute, an important one, but most definitely not the only accessory worth considering.
AMD has also demonstrated its latest mobile APUs (Accelerated Processing Units, as opposed to CPU), but only as part of its Computex demo by showing smooth HD video. Sorry to just to excite you, and if you didn’t realize, APU means that AMD put the processor and GPU on the same chip. Wrapping it all up, this new gaming laptop will support up to 32GB of DDR5-2400 memory, a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD, and the choice of mechanical drive or SSD. Gigabit Ethernet will be available, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, a trio of USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-C, and an SD card reader. Lastly, the new ROG model measures just at 1.3 inches, and weighs just 7 lbs. Ahem, for a complete laptop, a capable gaming one at that, this is quite a rarity for a portable. Gaming notebooks are, more than often, a class of computers known for being a nice 10 pounds or more. Asus has got something great going on here, and considering it’s an ROG product, that usually makes a happy equation for customers. The Strix GL702ZC is “shaping up to be a gear that AMD can show as proof that this is what we can do in laptops”, whether you believe it or not. Sorry ‘bout pricing, it’s not available yet.
